From the pastor's desk....
Good morning to all my family and friends.May the joy of the Lord be your strength today and always!
...
Today I would like to explore for just a little while, one verse of Scripture from the O.T. book of Psalms that,in my opinion, has been chopped up,added to,mutilated, twisted, distorted and abused probably more than any other verse. For some reason,it's seems easy for preachers and teachers to fall prey to the enemy's twisted scheme of distorting God's word, with the intent of leading astray those who wish to use every type of interpreting skills except the right kind, when trying to understand the Bible.
Psalm 82:6,"I said, you are gods, and all of you are children of the Most High."
To take this at face value without proper biblical exogesis,is what has led to the cults and the Word of Faith Movement to twisting this verse into major heretical doctrine for their cause.Even if we give just a little thought, mixed with common sense, reason and logic,I can't see how anyone could actually think that they are a little god under the Big God.
The biggest problem,in my view, seems to be the obvious way to understand it.By that I mean a couple of things:
1.) Where,in the Bible, can be found the first promise that man can be a god? (Genesis 3:5)
2.)Who made this promise to man? (Genesis 3:1)
3.)For what purpose was this promise made? (deception by the serpent)
It becomes so very apparent that this verse in Psalms was not intended to be taken in the way the cults and the Word of Faith Movement has understood it's meaning, that to ignore the obvious, almost seems intentional. In the context of where you find this verse, you will see that the Lord is passing judgement upon those who have been placed in a position of judging His people with righteous judgement. They have abused their position by corrupting themselves for gain.Thereby, not exercising proper, impartial judgement.Deuteronomy 1:17 states,"You shall not show partiality in judgement;you shall hear the small as well as the great;you shall not be afraid in any man's presence, for the judgement is God's.The case that is to hard for you, bring to me,and I will hear it."
Clearly,God intends for us not to allow fear or partiality to be a reason for judging properly. In the context of Psalm 82,it becomes clear then, that God is speaking to the judges who were to rule His people with fairness and justice, but somehow have fallen prey to showing partiality and injustice instead. They were commanded to hear the great and the small. In other words, they were not to take sides on an issue just because one may be wealthy and powerful, while the other may be considered "low class" and of little intrinsic worth. All men are to be treated fairly and honestly. It's sad to say that the same thing is still taking place all over the world today. The "haves" are still using the system to take away what little the "have nots" still possess.
It becomes apparent after examining Psalm 82:6,that this verse has been twisted out of context from what was intended by the Lord.Jesus referred to this same Psalm in the book of John 10:34,and He quoted it in it's proper context,"Is it not written in your law,I said,'you are gods' ". The following verses of John 10:35-38 show exactly what the proper way is to understand this verse. Please read when you have time.
Jesus was rebuking the religious leaders of His day, because the very ones who were to discern (judge) who the Messiah was when He arrived, missed it by a thousand miles.John 10:33 very pointedly makes the case.Jesus made the statement that He had shown them many good works from His Father. When He said these words, the Jewish leaders understood Him to equate Jehovah the Father with Himself, thereby, making Himself to be of Divine origin. In other words,Jesus was saying He was God.The Jews understood this so well, they thought that he was committing blasphemy, and wanted to stone Him for it.
Jesus Christ is the only Man who can and ever could declare Himself to be of Divine origin. No one else could or should ever make a statement that they are little gods.To do so is to violate plain principles of proper biblical exogesis.
Many today in the realm of T.V. preachers have gone down the slippery slope of cultic beliefs by buying into this lie from the devil (serpent).Satan is the only one that can be found in Scripture to have ever made the promise to mankind, that they too, could become gods.If I need to remind you,I will:Satan is a liar,he always has been and will continue to be a liar, until the day that he is eternally banished from the presence of God Almighty.
Man,ever since the fall, has wanted to be the one to decide his destiny (become God).It has never worked and it shall never work, for we are but frail humans.Creations of the true God,Jesus Christ and the Father.Kenneth Copeland has made a very serious mistake in making a quote such as the following;"Every believer has God's DNA in them".This is certainly blasphemy,we are not gods and we will never be gods. This is Mormonism at it's core belief. The following quote is from Lorenzo Snow (1814-1901) former LDS president:"As man is,God once was;As God is,man may become." I pray that you can see the correlation.
In closing, anyone who you may be listening to,who holds to this belief, that they are a little god, should immediately be put on your list of heretics. We live in a day and time when the spirit of deception is growing stronger, and there will be many who will arise proclaiming great things. We must be ever vigilant in our pursuit of God and studying His word.......Please,stay in the word and stay prayed up.Be a Facebook Christian.Seek His Face and study His Book! Thank you...........In the Master's service,John.
