Joseph
Joseph son of Jacob (Mathew 1:16) was an honest man who worked as a carpenter in the town of Nazareth. Kings were in his ancestral line - his family being descendants from king David. His marriage was planned and a contract was made with the family of a maiden who's name was Mary. The future was looking good for the carpenter, until the day he received the devastating news that his future wife was with child.
As an honorable man Joseph felt betrayed and wondered what he should do. He and Mary had entered into a betrothal with one another, which meant that everyone looked upon them as future husband and wife. Joseph knew that he had the option of a public divorce from the contract, which he realized would bring shame to both Mary and her family. On the other hand, if he divorced her quietly, there would be less chance of disgrace.
These plans changed when an angel spoke to him in a dream saying; "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." (Mathew 1: 20-21)
Because Joseph was a righteous man he believed, and obeyed the angelic messenger. Shortly thereafter Joseph and Mary undertook the arduous journey south to Bethlehem, for it was in David’s town that the new King was to be born. (Micah 5:2) In the birth of Jesus, the Glory of God came to our world - He was Immanuel, which means; God with us. (Isaiah 7:14)
Today, let us thank The Lord for faithful servants who obey.
