"Who Do People Say That I Am?"
Although Jesus was born in Bethlehem, He would be known as Jesus of Nazareth, because Joseph settled his family in Nazareth after returning from Egypt. At the age of thirty, Jesus began a three year preaching ministry of which the Scriptures record how large crowds gathered to hear His teaching and receive healings. At one point Jesus asked His close followers: "Who do people say that I am?" As recorded In Mark 8:28 they answered: "John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets."
From their answers we see how confused people were concerning Jesus, and to this day people are still confused as to the truth of who He really is.
So who is Jesus? To some He was a wise teacher remembered for the golden rule: "do unto others as you would have them do unto you."(Matthew 7:12) However, the Bible portrays a far more important Jesus. As an example, in John 1:1-4 we read that Jesus was with The Father from the beginning of time and that all things were made through Him; making Him God: “1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.”
Paul, under the anointing of the Holy Spirit, writes of who Jesus is in Colossians 1:15-20: "15 The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18 And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. 19 For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, 20 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross."
This is the Jesus that we who are born again know and serve. He is Creator, Savior and, The Lord who Redeemed us. For as Matthew 1:23 proclaims, Jesus is: "Immanuel, which means God with us." We believe in the Jesus of the Bible, not the one of whom the Deceiver has the world believing. If you do not know Jesus Christ as John and Paul proclaim, then I challenge you to prayerfully reread the Scripture passages above, asking God to give you an understanding of Jesus because, Scripture challenges everyone to seek the truth concerning Him; promising: "To all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." (John1:12)
Today, let us believe, and give praise for The Lord Jesus.
