Knowing The Prince of Peace.
How many times have you heard the frustrating question: “What else can go wrong?” You may have asked it yourself because of the pandemic, or your personal or, family’s circumstances. The news carries the heart breaking reports of devastating fires which can wipe out whole communities, also flooding which destroys not only homes but also precious farmland. It can also be a threat of war, or national turmoil with demonstrations that affect thousands, with supplies cut off creating shortages in the stores and layoffs. Because we are a broken people living in a broken world there is no one who has not known sorrow in their lives robbing them of peace.
Regarding peace, it was while foretelling the coming of Messiah that Isaiah wrote about the One who would be known as The Prince of Peace:
“For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” (Isaiah 9:6)
As we now know, Jesus of Nazareth was that promised One consequently, He is our Prince of Peace.
When the angels appeared to the shepherds announcing the birth of Jesus they proclaimed: “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” (Luke 2:14) The peace that the Bible speaks of is a personal peace. A peace that can only be experienced by those who know God and, possess the assurance that their sins are forgiven through Jesus Christ.
There are many who seek after peace in our world. They may engage in various political activities in an endeavour to bring world peace. Alternatively there are people who search for inner peace which can lead a person down many spiritual paths. For a time one may believe they have found their peace, but in the end it will fade. Only The Bible points the way to a permanent peace, where we learn that Jesus has promised a peace that extends beyond this life. He said: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” (John 14:27)
Christians will still know the up’s and down’s of life’s experiences however, we know that The Lord will be with us within our trials, bringing peace to sustain us. For Jesus also promised: “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 ) For over two thousand years The Lord Jesus has been faithful. His followers have endured many trials, but through it all they have experienced the peace that only the Prince of Peace can give, which is God’s Peace. I do pray that you have experienced this peace of which the Bible speaks.
Today, let us thank our Heavenly Father for Jesus, The Prince of Peace.
