God’s Good News Contrasting T.V. News
Many people today feel the power of evil is so strong that it has overtaken our world. It seems that there is aggression on every continent, bringing death and creating fear for a future without hope. The media has developed twenty four hour television news channels, broadcasting what they call “all that you need to know.” One can tune in at any time and hear reports of devastating weather, or politics discussed by a panel of experts. At this juncture, the news channels are giving their viewers a minute by minute update on the devastating invasion of Ukraine.
This in turn can create negative thinking for people who only hear fearful news all day and night. On the other hand, The Bible has Good News twenty four hours a day for all who desire to read it for themselves. Scripture gives a historic account of the history of Israel with all its highs and lows, concentrating on God’s dealings with humanity. It is filled with hopeful promises and remedies for righteous living. As an example, Psalm 1 gives a balanced account of God’s admonition for living our lives:
“1 Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the LORD,
and who meditates on his law day and night.
3 That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers.
4 Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.
5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.
6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.”(NIV)
The Good News of The Gospel is that Jesus came into our world in order to bring Salvation through the cross. On the night before His death Jesus celebrated Passover with His disciples where He gave them their final teachings and: “After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:
“Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 2 For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. 3 Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. 4 I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do. 5 And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began.” (John 17:1-5 NIV)
Was the media’s news today fearful? Pick up your Bible and read God’s Good News: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” (John 3:16-17)
