Jesus’ Declared Titles
The declared titles of Jesus Christ speak to who He is. When one thinks of a person’s title - be it male or female- that title declares who the person is, be it a profession such as a doctor or police officer. Or on the other hand, the title may be as important as a politician or supreme ruler. Each title gives credence to the person who holds the title. The Gospel of John gives you and I a wonderful insight into the person of Jesus of Nazareth when he wrote his opening verses:
“1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:1-5 ESV)
John then goes on to record some of the titles that Jesus asserted were descriptive of who He is. As an example, inJohn 6:35 we read how Jesus asserts that He can be our spiritual sustainer throughout life when He said: “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”
We live in a very dark world which has seen much suffering brought on innocent people by cruel men who assert dominance through their armies. There is also the darkness of false religion; of which Jesus came to expose by offering peace and freedom from these circumstances of life by encouraging people to turn to Him when He declared: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
Among the titles that Jesus declared Himself to be, is the comforting title of Shepherd. A shepherd is one who not only leads his flock to green pastures, but also protects them to the point of laying down his own life, as Jesus explained when proclaiming:
“14 I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. 16 And I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd. 17 For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life that I may take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.” (John 10:14-18 ESV)
When one repents of their sin and becomes a follower of Jesus Christ, they experience a renewal in their life. We are born anew because our sin has been forgiven through the atoning sacrifice of Jesus, and consequently, we are blessed by entering into a living relationship with our Savior who declared to the sister of Lazarus:
“I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.” (John 11:25-27 ESV)
The above descriptive titles are a sampling of the exclusive descriptions of The Lord Jesus. He alone is the only one capable of fulfilling them all in accordance with the needs of you and I. It is my prayer that you have experienced this Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
Today, let us give thanks for the opportunity of truly knowing Jesus.
