Psalm 96 - NKJV
In first Chronicles chapter 15 and 16 we read were David brought the Ark of The Covenant to Jerusalem. During the celebrations David committed a psalm to Asaph to be used in praise and worship. We can read many verse’s from that notable psalm in psalm 96:
“1 Oh, sing to the LORD a new song!
Sing to the LORD, all the earth.
2 Sing to the LORD, bless His name;
Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.
3 Declare His glory among the nations,
His wonders among all peoples.”
These are powerful opening verse’s encouraging all to recognize the goodness of The Lord. David calls on the people to bless The Lord by proclaiming His salvation. We who have experienced new life in Christ Jesus gratefully and enthusiastically sing a new song onto The Lord:
Verse’s 4-6 continue:
“4 For the LORD is great and greatly to be praised;
He is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the peoples are idols,
But the LORD made the heavens.
6 Honor and majesty are before Him;
Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.”
Our God deserves honour and praise as the Only True Creator. Nation’s may have their gods which are no more than idols denying salvation through Jesus, thereby leading their people into a life without redemption, with its eternal consequences. It is critical to remember the warning of Jesus recorded in John 8:24: “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
Psalm 96 continues by further encouraging people to give glory to The Lord:
“7 Give to the LORD, O families of the peoples,
Give to the LORD glory and strength.
8 Give to the LORD the glory due His name;
Bring an offering, and come into His courts.
9 Oh, worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness!
Tremble before Him, all the earth.”
As a nation Israel had experienced The Almighty’s guidance and protection. Consequently, David encourages the people to share their experience of Yahweh among the nation’s, knowing judgment was coming:
“10 Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns;
The world also is firmly established,
It shall not be moved;
He shall judge the peoples righteously.”
The prophet Isaiah also wrote of The Lord reigning justly in his prophecy concerning Messiah:
“6 For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of His government and peace
There will be no end,
Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom,
To order it and establish it with judgment and justice
From that time forward, even forever.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”- Isaiah 9:6-7.
Creation knows it’s Creator and rejoices at His Coming as verse’s 11-13 proclaim:
“11 Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad;
Let the sea roar, and all its fullness;
12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is in it.
Then all the trees of the woods will rejoice before the LORD.”
That The Lord Himself is coming in judgment, is proclaimed in both the Old Covenant, and the New Covenant:
David ends psalm 96 by declaring:
“13 For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth.
He shall judge the world with righteousness,
And the peoples with His truth.”
In Revelation 22:12 Jesus, declared:
"And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.”
Today, let us give praise to our Great God, who is both Creator and Judge over all the earth.
