Fear The Lord Your God and Get Your Life Back on Track
These days we tend to fear all the wrong things. We fear losing our jobs or our businesses, we fear not being able to get the holiday we want or the car we crave. Sometimes we fear the things that people are saying about us, or we fear the thought of falling ill. The truth is that in the course of a life, all these things that we spend so much time being fearful about, do not amount to much. The only fear we need in our lives is the fear of God. When we put God first in all things, all the other stuff seems to sort itself out.
When God gave Moses His commandments, one of the first instructions was that the people of Israel learn to fear their Lord. Why? How can it be a good thing to fear someone who loves us as much as God does? The simple answer is that by fearing God, we learn courage in everything else. Once we understand that God is always there for us and that in return for our faith He will give us succour in all things, all the matters that concerned us before fade into insignificance.
Our fear of the Lord encourages us to be good, to be watchful for His word, to be mindful of His will. By turning our minds to all things good, we soon realise that nothing truly bad can happen to us. Yes we might lose our jobs or fall ill or struggle to pay the bills, but with God in our hearts and minds showing us the promise of a brighter future through the sacrifice made by Jesus, His son, all our anxieties melt away.
So how should our fear of the Lord manifest itself in our daily lives? Does it mean we should spend all our time bashful and lacking in confidence, worried about every little thing that we do. No, the opposite is true. Fear of the Lord means we can grow in confidence in our daily lives. By respecting His commandments, by understanding the true nature of His grace, we can lift up our heads and knowing we have a formidable ally in all our endeavours and tribulations, realise that there is nothing really left to fear at all.
