First John 1:8 - 2:11 (NIV)
The first epistle, or letter, of John contains important teachings concerning the Person of Jesus Christ. John starts his teachings in chapter one by proclaiming the Divinity of Jesus, calling Him The Light of the World. We are encouraged to walk in The Light where The Blood of Jesus will purify us from all sin, of which I wrote in the post: “Divinity Of Jesus - First John 1:1-7.”
John continuing in verse 8 of the first chapter of his letter:
“8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.”
Paul wrote in a similar way: “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” - Romans 3:23-24. That each one is a sinner there cannot be an argument, however, hearing the news that there is pardon and redemption for confessed sin, is indeed Good News to everyone seeking forgiveness, and a relationship with God.
The grace expressed in verse 9: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness,” is one of the most wondrous promises of The Bible. In Hebrews 9:14, we further read: “How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!” As a pardoned sinner, serving God is one of the greatest experience in life.
Upon coming to Christ, and experiencing forgiveness, new believers no longer live a sinful lifestyle however, being human there will be occasional sin in all our lives. The opening verse’s of first John chapter two addresses such occurrences:
“1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”
An advocate is one who stands beside and pleads on another’s behalf. The picture is of a sinner standing before the Judgment Throne, where Jesus pleads on our behalf. All who are born again, and believe in Jesus as our Redeemer, have been Sanctified through His Atoning Sacrifice on the cross as Romans 3:25 states: “God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood —to be received by faith.“ It is crucial to understand that faith in Jesus is the key to the spiritual new life.
Where John wrote in verse 2: “ He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world,” he is stating that Jesus atonement is not only for Israel, but for all who believe through faith, no matter where they live because: “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed.”- 1 Peter 2:24.
The Christian life is a changed life, lived under new management:
“3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did.”
After coming to faith in Jesus, I remember a family member telling me that people were watching in order to see how genuine my conversion really was. Nevertheless, I understood as a sinful member of the human race, I was incapable of approaching a Holy God. It was He who had reached down as a loving Heavenly Father to bring redemption by sending His Son, who bore my sin upon the cross. This knowledge is life changing, I was born anew and would continue to live in the Light.
John continues his teaching on the command of which Jesus gave in John chapter 13: “34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”:
“7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.”
Because Born Again Christians walk in the Light, we have a special affinity with fellow believers:
“9 Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister is still in the darkness. 10 Anyone who loves their brother and sister lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. 11 But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.”
All who have confessed Jesus as their Saviour have this promise of Jesus in John 12:46: “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”
Today, let us give thanks for The Light reveal unto us.
