The Relevance of Psalms Today
Psalm 1 (part 2)
In part one of this study, we observed that God is talking to believers. We are given warning not to observe, obey or take to heart ungodly counsel. The psalmist admonishes believers to meditate day and night in the word. In a beautiful word picture the psalmist explains the benefits of the steadfast mediation and study of God’s word. It is our Heavenly Father’s desire that all His children are rooted and grounded in scripture, which cultivates a faith in Him that can stand the storms of this life. The believer that is rooted and grounded in the word will not be moved by adversity, they know without a shadow of a doubt that they have victory, because of Jesus, over every situation.
In the second part of this short but profound Psalm, the psalmist describes the believer that has succumbed to the counsel of the world. There life and attitude resembles the ungodly.
“The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away.”
This believer is shattered when the storms of life hit. Their response to the storm is as an unbeliever. They are overcome with fear and anxiety. We are not speaking of believers that are in the process of growing in their faith. They will respond differently at different stages, but this believer has chosen not to study and meditate on God’s word. Although they may still attend church, they have embraced the world’s philosophies as the answer to their problems.
“Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.”
This verse speaks of end time events, but it is also pertinent today. God’s judgment/consequence for the godly and righteous is His peace, mercy, grace, joy and love daily. The believer that has not taken the time to get to know the Sovereign God cannot stand in this place. Not because it is not available to them, but because they have chosen another way.
“For the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.”
This verse simply states that God’s way, the way of the righteous is eternal, but the world’s way and philosophies shall, without a doubt perish. Will the person that has sincerely put their faith in Jesus Christ, but choose not to study and meditate on God’s word perish? No, they are saved.
Studying and meditating on God’s word is a choice we are given each and every day. What will your choice be today? What will your choice be tomorrow? What will your choice be for the rest of your life? I choose to “delight in the law of the Lord” and in His word will I meditate day and night.
