The Relevance of Psalms Today
Psalm 4 (part 2)
Last week we ended this study with verse three which states “But know that the Lord hath set apart him that is godly for himself.” As I meditated again this week on this verse, I observed a confidence that David had that we, as children of the King, should have. David knew that the Lord had set him apart. The evidence of this knowledge is in the second part of this verse, “the Lord will hear when I call unto him.” Not might hear or may hear, but “the Lord will hear.” Is this evidence evident in your life?
Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
David continues to speak to the “sons of men” in verse four. He is essentially saying to them and to us, look at the awesomeness of God on my life. Do not be jealous or envious for that is sin. Search your own heart and be willing to see, accept and repent of what is blocking the anointing and power of God on your life.
David also gives us an important key to prayer in this statement. He says “be still.” Prayer is a two way conversation. For many believers, including myself at one time, it is a one way conversation. We do all the talking, giving God our laundry list and we are up and gone. David said “be still” become quiet and listen. The Almighty God, the Creator of the universe wants to speak to you, “be still.”
Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and put your trust in the Lord.
In verse five David continues to admonish the “sons of men” and us to walk in the way of the Lord by offering “the sacrifices of righteousness.” What are “the sacrifices of righteousness?” Sacrifice means to surrender, to give up something. What is the Lord requiring us to give up for His righteousness? This verse takes us back to verse two, “how long will ye love vanity, and seek after leasing?” Our Heavenly Father is requiring us to surrender our lust for the emptiness of this world’s material goods and all of our deceitful and manipulative ways. If these things are in our hearts then they are permeating our lives and our trust is in them. Surrender the empty, deceitful lust of this world “and put your trust in the Lord.”
My prayer for everyone that this study reaching is that you will search your hearts. Allow the Lord to reveal what is blocking His blessings and power in your life. Be open to receive rebuke, correction, cleansing, and restoration from our loving Heavenly Father.
It is so important that we keep our hearts clear of sin. Sin breaks our fellowship with the Lord and quenches the power of Holy Spirit in our lives. A willingness to see, accept and repent restores fellowship and the power of the Spirit to us.
