The Relevance of Psalms Today
Psalm 5 (part 1)
We have been told by our parents and medical professionals that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It prepares your physical body for what it must endure throughout the day. How do you prepare your soul and spirit for what it must endure throughout the day? In this Psalm we observe how David preparing his soul and spirit each day.
Give ear to my words, O Lord, consider my meditation.
In this Psalm David’s prayer begins with to requests. He asks the Lord to hear what he has to say and to consider his request. David approaches God in a humble and reverence manner. He understood the privilege and honor granted to us by God to implore His help.
Hearken unto the voice of my cry, my King, and my God: for unto thee will I pray.
There are three key elements in this brief verse that all believers should grasp. First, David petitions the Lord to grant his request. Next, he proclaims who the Lord is to him, “my King,” the One that governs and reigns in and over his life and “my God” the Sovereign Almighty Creator that provided for his every need. Is He your King and your God? Not your mother’s or your father’s but your King and God. Not your husband’s or your wife’s but your King and God. Just say it to yourself a few times, “my King, and my God.” WOW that is so awesome. He’s mine. Finally, knowing who the Lord is in your life brings the understanding that David had acquired and that is that God and God alone could answer his prayer.
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O Lord; in the morning, will I direct my Prayer unto thee, and will look up.
How do you prepare for the day? As soon as your eyes open what do you think of? David could not/would not start his day without talking to the Lord. As king, David’s days were full of challenges and physical battles. As believers, our days are full of challenges, spiritual battles and sometimes even physical battles for our brothers and sisters serving in the military. We need, just as David did, the spiritual direction, guidance, and strength our Heavenly Father provides us each day to be victorious over every situation.
I love the last part of this verse. Not only did he direct his prayer to the Lord, but he also said “and will look up.” Not look around, but “look up.” When we “look up” we see God’s perfect kingdom reigning over all the earth, which brings peace and assurance that our God is in control. When we look around we see man’s chaotic rule and earthly chaos which brings fear to the hearts of even believers. How do we “look up” each morning? We “look up” by spending time in prayer and by reading and meditating on the word of God. By doing this we will see God and see things His way. How do we look around? One way is by listening to and feeding our spirits the world’s news first thing in the morning. The results of this are fear and defeat.
How do you start your day? My brothers and sisters purpose in your heart to start your day with the Lord. He promises peace and victory over every challenge that comes your way.
