The Relevance of Psalms Today
Psalm 7 (part 4)
In last week’s study, I really did not expound much on the last part of verse seven where David says “for their sakes therefore return thou on high.” David desired the people to see the Lord in His exalted position. What a humble servant. Although, David was king he knew who was the King of kings as we will see in the next verses.
“The Lord shall judge the people: judge me, O Lord according to my righteousness, and according, to mine integrity that is in me.”
As king, David was to judge/rule over the people. Here we observe David seeking the Lord’s judgment over the people and over himself. The word judge is referring to the sovereign rein of our God. I Timothy 6:15-16 proclaims the sovereign rein of the Lord Jesus Christ. It states, “Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom on man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.” In this passage we grasp the fact that Jesus is the exalted King over all the kings that have ever ruled upon the earth. David, however, also understood the Lord’s sovereign rule over his kingship. You see Jesus is not only the exalted King above all earthly kings, but He is their King. David looked to the Sovereign King of kings for guidance to rule those the Lord had entrusted to him. He also sought the Lord’s rein over his own life.
My brothers and sisters, servants of the true and living God, I pose this question to you. How much time do you spend in the presence of the Lord on behalf of those He has entrusted to you? David was king, but knew that he needed to spend time with the “King of kings” to justly rule the people. David also knew that before he could judge/rule the people, he needed the sovereign rein of God in his own life as seen in the second part of this verse. David says, “judge me, O Lord according to my righteousness, and according, to mine integrity that is in me.” In other words, David is saying judge/rule over me according to my right standing and my character.
Here are some questions to ponder. Is the Sovereign God reining supreme over your life? Are you seeking His sovereign rule over the souls He has entrusted to you?
