ONE SUNDAY MORNING:
It was like every other first day of the week when little Joseph awoke, his mother was busy already doing the house work like many urban dwellers in Jerusalem that morning. As the day progressed she sent little Joseph to the market. As he walked about the dust filled air and the ambient noise of voices a chatter filled the streets of Jerusalem.
Then as he entered into the market place he noticed a crowd was gathering, toward the gate of the city. His curiosity provoked by all this activity; little Joseph starts to follow the crowd, listening to conversations about a coming king, while others are laying down branches to make way for the royal procession. He sees religious men of different sects gathered together, looking at each other in anger as the spoke of this so-called king to come.
Little Joseph decided he would join the lines of people who had gathered on both sides of the street leading into the city, caught up in the moment and momentum of the occasion. He had forgotten all about going to the market for his mother. Then as if a rushing mighty wind had started to blow the crowd became even more excited as what seem to be just common men walking into the city. Men and Woman starting waving branches in excitement and yelling out Hosanna, Hosanna! Joseph looked over at a group of religious men who were tearing at their clothing and waving their fists at the men. There was a sense of awe in the air, but also a very present anger.
Joseph then focused again upon the crowd and squeezed himself into the front deciding he wanted to see what the commotion was all about. He looked out toward the countryside where he seen in the distance a man sitting on a donkey, riding the beast of burden with his legs to one side. His head draped in a prayer shawl and looking humble but sure of himself. The people around him intensified their shouts of praise and yelled at the tops of their voices Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna! Blessed is the King that comes in the name of the LORD, peace in heaven and glory in the highest!
Then a Pharisee stepped out into the road way to challenge the man on the donkey, saying to him Rabbi, rebuke these people rebuke these disciples, to which little Joseph heard the man of on the donkey say to the Pharisee “ if they held their peace, the stones would immediately cry out “. Joseph had never heard anyone say anything like this and felt an excitement in his heart he had never felt before. Then he began waving a branch of palm which he picked up and joined the chorus of people who were rejoicing as this humble but powerful man who dressed like a common man but was called “ The King who comes in the Name of the LORD “ . Hosanna, Hosanna, Hosanna to the King!
As the Humble King went by the people rejoiced and little Joseph couldn’t contain himself, he had forgotten all about the market place and ran home to tell his mother what had happened and that he would never forget the joy he felt as he watched the man on a donkey ride silently by waving to everyone. His heart raced within him as he recalled the whole ordeal to his mother, and his mother sat amazed that someone had touched her little boy so deeply. She never even rebuked little Joseph for not bring back the bread and fishes from the market, but instead sat and recounted everything he had told her and wondered what it all meant and what would become of the man on the donkey.
Friend will you receive the man on the donkey as the king who comes in the name of the Lord or will you reject him like the religious men who were angered by the presence of the Spirit of the Lord, who could not tolerate the worship which flows from a willing heart. A little child knows when they’re in the presence of the humility, meekness, and integral strength, shouldn’t you give your heart, life, and praise to the man who came humbly to die for your sins. Something to think about. Selah.
Shalom & Agape!
