Numbers 21:23-24 King James Version (KJV)
23 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel.
24 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.
Numbers 21:23-24 International Standard Version (ISV)
23 Instead of letting Israel pass through his territory, Sihon mustered his entire army and marched out to meet them in the wilderness. He arrived at Jahaz and attacked Israel. 24 But Israel defeated him in battle and took possession of all his lands from Arnon to Jabbok, including the Ammonites, even though the border of the Ammonites was strong.

These are my thoughts, please share yours.
23 This was a very wrong move for them to make, they could have told Israel no and they would just lose an ally but now the made themselves enemies against God’s people. This is the way the world often works.
24 Now they could go thru Ammon but they lost so much because they turned against the Lord, turning away or against the Lord brings so much lose.
