It is critically important for each one of us, and our children, to have a correct Biblical comprehension of who Jesus is. To have the wrong knowledge of Jesus Christ is spiritually dangerous as He warned: "if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins."(John 8:24) Sadly there are many wrong perceptions of Jesus Christ, resulting in there been many Jesus’ for people to follow. As an example; Alice Bailey (1880-1949) was brought up in a Christian home until an encounter with a spirit guide one night in her bedroom. At first she thought he was Jesus, but later would call him the Tibetan, who’s teachings led her into a belief in the universal brotherhood of religions. She became involved in the so called ageless wisdom and esoteric thought, believing that Christ was one of the ageless ones who brought wisdom to all religion’s throughout history.
Here is an example of her belief concerning the Christ: “I believed in the power of Christ to save then and I believe in it a thousandfold more today. I know that people can turn from the error of their ways and I have seen them again and again find that reality in themselves which St. Paul calls “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Upon that knowledge I stake my eternal salvation and the salvation of mankind. I know that Christ lives and that we live in Him and I know that God is our Father and that, under God’s great Plan, all souls eventually find their way back to Him. I know that the Christ life in the human heart can lead all men from death to immortality. I know that because Christ lives we shall live also and that we are saved by His life. But I question our human techniques very often and I believe that God’s way is often the best and that He often leaves us to find our own way home, knowing that in all of us there is something of Himself which is divine, which never dies, and which comes to knowledge. I know that nothing in Heaven or hell can come between the love of God and His children. I know that He stays on guard watching “until the last weary pilgrim has found his way home.” I know that all things work together for good to those who love God, and this means that we do not love some far off, abstract Deity but that we love our fellowmen. Loving our fellowmen is evidence – undefined, maybe, but just as sure – that we love God.”
(The Unfinished Autobiography of Alice Bailey, pp. 60, 61)
At first sight this sounds good until you understand that she is speaking of the universal Christ, not Jesus Christ of Scripture. The God that she refers to is Not The God of Scripture. In her theology there is no Redemption or Atonement from sin at the cross, as she makes clear when she wrote: “All the other approaches to God by any other people, at any time and in any country, are regarded by the orthodox Christian as wrong approaches. Every possible effort has been made to force orthodox Christianity on those who accept the inspiration and the teachings of the Buddha or of others who have been responsible for preserving the divine continuity of revelation. The emphasis has been, as we all well know, upon the "blood sacrifice of the Christ" upon the Cross and upon a salvation dependent upon the recognition and acceptance of that sacrifice. The vicarious at-one-ment has been substituted for the reliance which Christ Himself enjoined us to place upon our own divinity; the Church of Christ has made itself famous and futile (as the world war proved) for its narrow creed, its wrong emphases, its clerical pomp, its spurious authority, its material riches and its presentation of a dead Christ. His resurrection is accepted, but the major appeal of the churches has been upon His death.”
(The Work of the Christ Today and in the Future, p. 64)
It is important to remember that these words, and teachings are of a woman who, although brought up in the church, and whose husband went on to become a Christian Minister (they did later divorce), was not grounded sufficiently in scripture to recognize false doctrine when confronted with it. It is because of the dire consequences of false doctrine that Jesus gave His warning: "if you do not believe that I am he, you will indeed die in your sins." Without the belief in, and acceptance of, the Atonement of Jesus Christ there is no Redemption or Eternal Life. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." (2 Timothy 3:16)
Today, let us praise God for The Atonement.
