Understanding the Day of the Lord, Part 2 --- 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3
As we have moved up toward the celebration of our Lord’s first coming, we have been looking at His second coming. When He went away, the angel said, “The same Jesus, who has gone away, will so come in like manner as you have seen Him go.” So the promise of our Lord is that He would return. And we are obviously nearer to His return than ever in history. As time marches on, His return becomes nearer and nearer.
I think it’s important for us to live in the light of the return of Christ. It’s not necessarily a popular subject to talk about today, because with the prospects of the returning Christ, there is the reality of divine judgment on sinners on the earth, and even on the earth and the universe itself. But it’s important for us to understand that it is the very reality of the return of Christ and judgment, and the eternal punishment that goes along with judgment; it is behind our need to preach the gospel. You have to be faithful to give the bad news in order to make the good news good news. And that is exactly what the apostle Paul did.
